Regarding CEAP (Certified Consultants)
Q. Can I take courses on CEAP training even though I am not a certified clinical psychologist?
A. Yes, you do not have to be a certified clinical psychologist to take the course. Human resources staff, top management of companies, as well as graduate school students has taken the course.
Q. Are CEAP examinations offered in Japan?
A. Presently, examinations are given in English, and dictionaries are allowed. The Japanese version of the examination is being prepared for a December 2004 launch, by the Employee Assistance Certification Commission, in the U.S.
Q. If a CEAP exam is held in Japan, would I be eligible to take the exam after taking the "CEAP Training Course" that you offer?
A. The CEAP Training Course is simply one training unit that counts toward eligibility for the exam, and there are other requirements.
For instance, if you have a M.S. in psychology, a minimum of two years of EAP (e.g. counseling in the field) experience would be required. Also, 20 hours of supervision (supervised training) under a CEAP holder would be needed as well. If you do not hold a psychology M.S. degree, then a minimum of five years experience in EAP is required.
Please note, however, that certification requirements are subject to changes.
This course is the only course offered in Japan that counts as a course credit toward a CEAP examination, which is the sole EAP certification accepted in the world. CEAP is an American certification examination, so supervision and field experience are examined at the time of application.
Therefore we believe that while the completion of the training course will not automatically make the person eligible for a CEAP exam, it is a large step in that direction.
It is true that one of the objectives of the CEAP Training Class is for preparation of the CEAP examination, but we would also like to provide a setting for people to be able to have a thorough study of the subject of CEAP, which is gradually gaining popularity in Japan.
Presently, there does not seem to be a clear knowledge on the distinction between EAP and such fields as industrial counseling and clinical psychology. We are aiming to bring up individuals who could put to use EAP techniques that have demonstrated their effectiveness in economical and clinical results in the U.S. and European countries.
Q. I would like to pursue the CEAP certification exam. After the training, what kind of follow-up support will be given by JEAP?
A. We will inform you of exam schedules, and the required procedures for application. We can also provide support for the CEAP supervision, which is another requirement for the certification. Supervision can be done over the telephone.
Q. How many certified CEAPs are there in Japan, and do all of them have a job as an EAP?
A. Presently, there is only one CEAP holder in Japan: Kaoru Ichikawa of JEAP. We also have EAP consultant staffs that are scheduled to receive certification early next year.
Q. CEAP is an American certification. Does one need to be able to speak English in order to become certified?
A. Presently, examinations are given only in English, but Japanese examinations are being prepared for launching in 2004 by the CEAP certification authority (Virginia, U.S.A.) The text and test will be in Japanese.
Q. What kind of opportunities is out there after I become certified?
A. Job opportunities exist in the corporate or EAP outsourcing environment as an EAP counselor.
Q. Please clarify the merits of becoming certified as a CEAP.
